This glossary has been prepared from the DocBook master file of
The on-line hacker Jargon File, version 4.4.7, (downloaded on the 16th June 2010).
The Jargon File is in the public domain, to be freely used, shared, and modified.
From the book introduction:
This document is a collection of slang terms used by various subcultures of computer hackers. Though some technical material is included for background and flavor, it is not a technical dictionary; what we describe here is the language hackers use among themselves for fun, social communication, and technical debate.
Hacker:
1. A person who enjoys exploring the details of programmable systems and how to stretch their capabilities, as opposed to most users, who prefer to learn only the minimum necessary. .....
8. [deprecated] A malicious meddler who tries to discover sensitive information by poking around. Hence password hacker, network hacker. The correct term for this sense is cracker.
