Recently I have helped with a transfer of a library catalog from a commercial software to
Evergreen. The original data were exported in MARC21 format and for someone used to conveniences of XML technologies this was not an easy task.
I hope that this reference will simplify my task in the future (and hopefully will come useful to other people as well).
Excerpt from
http://www.bl.uk/bibliographic/exchange.html:
The MARC 21 formats are standards for the representation and communication of bibliographic and related information in machine-readable form. The MARC 21 formats are maintained by the Library of Congress in consultation with various user communities. The British Library adopted MARC 21 as its cataloguing format in June 2004 as part of the implementation of an integrated library system.
